Race Information

Tallahassee Youth Triathlon Series (TYTS) races are for the entire family! Whether your child is new to the concept of a kids’ triathlon, or has participated in previous years, we aim to make it a fun, learning experience!  No prior triathlon experience is necessary. Read on for information about the series, race distances, award categories, and our race course.  Information on entry fees and participation deadlines can be found under the “registration” tab.

RACE DATES:

Once again, there will be three YTS Youth and Adult Super Sprint Triathlons (April, July, and Sept) and we are pleased to be introducing Tallahassee to another aspect of multisport in 2013.  In June, we will be hosting one of USA Triathlon’s Splash and Dash Youth Aquathlon events (swim/run race).

Families are encouraged to invite friends and family to cheer on the triathletes! Races feature:

  • Race t-shirt and “goody bag” for all participants
  • The full “Triathlon Experience” – pre-race marking, swim cap, etc!
  • Safe and fun course
  • Chip timing with online results
  • Finish Line Celebration – complete with refreshments, activities and entertainment!
  • Event photographer
  • Family Swim Time following the race
  • Finisher Medals for all athletes
  • Awards for top finishers in each age group
  • Training Sessions (held in conjunction with the Capital Region YMCA)
  • Newcomer Race Preview (held prior to race dates)
  • Series Points Championship
  • .. and much more!

RACE DISTANCES:

Per USAT rules, athlete’s age on 12/31/13 determines the age group. See “Age-Up Rule” below.

5 & 6-year olds:

7 & 8-year olds:

9 & 10-year olds:

11 & 12 year olds:

13 – 15  year olds:

Adult Super Sprinters (over age 15):

  • same distances as 13 to 15-year olds
  • Perfect for parents, college students … any triathlon newcomer!

AGE-UP RULE:

All TYTS events will follow the USAT “Age-Up rule”. This means the age of the athlete is determined not by the age on race day but rather by the age the athlete will be on December 31, 2013. **For example, if your child is 8 years old today but will turn 9 on November 20, 2013, he/she will race as a 9 year old. This may require that your athlete goes from a shorter race distance to a longer race distance. However, if the distance is a concern, you may choose to have your child race-down (stay in the shorter race distance).  He/she will still get a final race time, but will not be eligible for awards (of course, everyone receives a finisher’s medal!) Our priority is to ensure the kids are comfortable with their distance, and that they have fun and stay safe!

AWARDS:

The top three male AND female finishers in each individual age group will win an award.  In addition, the top five finishers in each individual age group will be awarded Series Championship Points (SCP), which qualify them for a Grand Prize at the final TYTS race (September 1, 2013). Additional details on age group awards, plus guidelines for earning SCP, can be found on the “RESULTS” tab.

MAPS:

Use the map below to get personalized driving directions to the FSU Morcom Aquatic Center.  The pool is located at 2550 Pottsdamer Street, Tallahassee, FL 32310.  For individual course maps by age group, please follow the links above under “Race Distances.”

There is a sliding scale entry fee, based on when you submit your registration. This information will be added online ASAP. Please check the “registration” tab on Monday. We hope your family can join us this year for a race or two!

What are the requirements for beginning swimmmers? If he has not yet mastered swimming is he still able to participate?

Thanks for your question. We love to see new families getting involved in the Tallahassee Youth Triathlon Series. Each year, there are lots of young swimmers involved in our races. For their safety, we require everyone to be able to swim a length of the pool (25 yards) on their own. But, since race day is exciting and we want our newer swimmers to be able to conserve their energy for the bike/run portions of the race, participants can use a kickboard during the swim when/if they get tired. FYI – we also have “swim buddies” from the FSU Swim Team on hand for the youngest age brackets. These athletes actually get in the pool with the kids and swim along as encouragement if needed. Would love to add you to our email list, so you are aware of upcoming practice sessions for the series. Perhaps your son can come practice a bit to see how much swimming will be necessary on race day.

Please add me to your email list. I would like for my 6 and 11 year old to participate this year; however, we will need the clinic as we are not on any type of swim team.

The clinics are a great way to practice and increase your child’s comfort level in the pool, but rest assured we have all ability levels taking part in the TYTS. No need to have been on a swim team! Many of our participants just like swimming for fun during the summer!
